Summer of 2007

July 23, 2007 at 12:00 pm (Uncategorized)

Well it’s been quite some time since I’ve posted a blog entry, so for those who have been wondering what’s been going on with me, let me fill in the last couple of months.

After shooting Poker After Dark (season 2) and High Stakes Poker (season 3), I had some well-deserved time off of work.  The Pokerdome was officially canceled, so we had to unload of our gear to a storage unit until our next season-long poker show is booked.

I joined a bowling league with a couple roommates and friends, and we call ourselves The Douche Crew.  We got awesome bowling shirts made with our names stitched on the front.  We yell and scream and generally piss off the older “bowling serious business” fellows off every Wednesday night.  We’re currently ranked 7th out of 20 teams, which is better than I would have expected we’d do.  I’m sitting at a 147 average and can’t seem to break it.

I spent most of June playing poker tournaments, as there were quite a few going on in town to coincide with the World Series of Poker.  I made the prediction on June 1st that I’d have a five figure cash before the end of the month.  After a few disappointing finishes (one where my AK lost to AQ all in preflop with 3 tables left), I was finally able to win a $150 buyin tournament at Binion’s on July 29th for a cool $10k.  My picture will be up on the Wall of Champions at Binion’s for a year to follow.  It was my biggest win to date, and was the largest field Binion’s had for their series at 488 players.

My busy schedule led to the demise of my relationship with my girlfriend, and we are now broken up.  No, the girl in my profile picture isn’t my new girl… she’s actually my buddy’s girl.  But I’m back on the market, which in Vegas is not a very promising thing.

Got lucky enough to have Jaime from the Transit War pay me a visit along with Pat Causeway and Shea Small.  We had a pretty awesome weekend, minus the hundreds I lost at the Casino War tables.  Arm The Angels also just paid Las Vegas a visit, and I won a few bucks hanging out with them at Hard Rock after their show.  It was nice to see some of the SD crew… Kelly, Erica, Noah, Harold, and whoever else I’m forgetting.

Discovered a great new band called The Photo Atlas, and was lucky enough to see them play for free at the Dive Bar.  What’s the name of the bar?  The Dive Bar.  And then I got to see Hot Hot Heat play a free show at the Hard Rock.  Man is the Vegas music scene terrible that they have to make shows free for people to come out.

My aunt and my grandmother visited me, too, and it was good to see some family as I don’t make it down to San Diego that often.  We saw Spamalot at the Wynn, ate at Joe’s Stone Crab, and hit up some slots.

To end my summer off, we had a few days of work running graphics and statistics for the final table of the World Series of Poker on Pay-Per-View.  It was the longest tournament we’ve ever had to cover, and it was definitely a feat after two days of programming to make our software look like the rest of the WSOP shows.  I think the end result came out great, and I hope our company ends up working on future WSOP events.

I guess the summer isn’t really over just yet.  I hope to get out of Vegas for a few days soon… either to Arizona to go see some Transit War shows or just to San Diego.  I love living in Vegas, but getting out of town for a couple days to see how the rest of the country lives is nice once in awhile.

That’s about it for now.  Oh, I got a Treo a few months ago and have been super nerding it up.  The nice thing is that the camera takes decent pictures and crushes my old camera phone.  I’ll have to post some pics from some of the madness in the last two months, when I get un-lazy.

Time to go listen to the pirated versions of the new Portugal. The Man and Minus The Bear CD’s I just downloaded today.  Yeah, not even released yet.  I’m in music heaven right now.
